Brief History of Calvary Baptist Church
Calvary Baptist Church of Hendersonville, North
Carolina began as a Mission of the First Baptist Church in
Hendersonville in 1900. The Mission grew from the very
beginning and was organized as East Hendersonville Baptist
Church. About 1902, the building then occupied by the
Presbyterian Church was purchased and moved to a location east
of the railroad where it stood until it was torn down several
years ago. In 1912, the building was sold to the Wesleyan
Methodist Church and the church moved to the location on North
Grove Street. In 1968 the Calvary Baptist Church building was sold
to the King Hardware Company and a new Church was built on its
present location which is Haywood Road. It is unfortunate that
the records of the Church history cannot be given. The
following men have served as Pastors of the Church: Rev. A.I.
Justice, Rev. George Wright, Rev. C.C. Blackburn, Rev. Ham,
Rev. R.V. Miller, Rev. Fred McKenzie, Rev. Sherman Patterson
(supply), Rev. George Pennell, Rev. Emory Nester, Rev. W.E.
Sinclair, Dr. J. Leland (“Preacher Buddy”)
Mullinax, Rev. Ed Yeoman, Dr. Freddie M. Young, Rev. Paul
Owens (supply), and Rev. Joe Canipe. Preacher Buddy Mullinax is
the present Pastor and has served the Church on three different
occasions.
